American who fled to Thailand to avoid child porn trial arrested

Avi Kartin, 37 (Bergen County Prosecutor's Office)

A 37-year-old man living in Thailand was arrested this week after failing to appear for his arraignment years ago when he was indicted for allegedly possessing child pornography, officials said.

Avi Kartin, of Englewood, was charged with possessing child pornography and failing to appear for his arraignment. A bench warrant was issued in October 2015, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday.

In 2013, officials investigated images of child pornography online and determined that Kartin possessed the photographs. He was found to be living in Thailand and a grand jury indicted him in 2015.

On Wednesday, Kartin flew back to the United States. He was immediately put in custody at Newark International Liberty Airport after he flew in from Bangkok International Airport in Thailand.

Kartin was released after making a first court appearance on Wednesday and is next scheduled to appear before a judge on June 26.
