Stray dogs in Huay Yai are going missing and residents claim Cambodian construction workers are eating them.
Ornranong Cupser, 38, contacted the media March 7 to complain about the worker camp near the Huay Yai indoor stadium, claiming that the Cambodians are feeding off a pack of 100 stray dogs being cared for by her and her neighbors.
She said 20 of the dogs have gone missing and that one worker admitted to chopping them up for dinner.
Ornranong said the dogs don’t belong to one person, but are looked after by residents. She even takes females in for sterilization to control the population. However, recently, many of the dogs went missing and she spotted another running out of the construction site with a wire around its neck.
Wiparan Mingkwan, 64, told reporters she often sees Cambodian workers from the camp chasing dogs around and hitting them. Another two young Khmer men approached her and asked to buy some of her dogs, telling her they planned to eat them.
Authorities are looking into the matter but the construction camp is under the jurisdiction of the military. The project manager reportedly came out to talk to residents and promised to warn the workers not to do feed off the local soi dog population.
