A police investigation found that the man had been staying alone in the 18th-floor room since Feb 7.

An Australian man fell to his death from a hotel room in Sathon district of Bangkok early Saturday morning in what police believed was a suicide.

The 49-year-old tourist, now named as John McKinnon, was found dead on a second-floor terrace of the 28-storey hotel on Sathon Soi 1 off South Sathon Road, said Pol Col Akkhawut Thaneerat, chief of the Thung Mahamek district police station. Police were alerted at around 8am.

Mr McKinnon, wearing a black T-shirt and black shorts with an eye mask of the same colour, suffered head and body injuries, a broken left arm and broken legs. His body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital for a post-mortem examination, Thai media reported.

Police said a hotel guest on the second floor reported hearing something falling from the upper floors early Saturday morning but did not come out to check at the time. At around 8am, she went out onto the balcony of her room and saw the body lying face-down on the terrace, said Pol Col Akkhawut.

A police investigation found that the man had been staying alone in the 18th-floor room since Feb 7. There were no traces of a struggle inside the room. A farewell letter written to his elder brother was found in the room, officers said.

Police are informing the Australian embassy to contact his family. Officers also intend to contact the brother to find out what might have led to the man’s death.
